Criss Angel and David Blaine are often compared for their street magic techniques and bizarre, often dangerous stunts. But clearly, both are brilliant mentalists who know what it takes to evoke shock and awe from curious spectators.

There’s a saying in the world of magic on that ‘The greatest tricks are often the simplest ones.’ It summarizes what magic is really about — the simple stuff. Understand the elements of magic and the pulse of human surprise, and you’ve got yourself a cool magic trick in the making. One such trick, for demonstration, is a card trick called the Wiregram.

Use an ordinary piece of wire to guess a spectator’s selected card, and no one will be able to figure out how you did it. Use a little hot liquid to trigger the wire, or attract attention and use flash paper to reveal the card.

You can use wiregrams over and over again and people will likely want you to “do it again” — But they’ll never be able to figure out how you did it. (Can you?) That’s the key of mentalism and magic. Rouse the curiosity; feed the awe. It’s all about the power of the human mind.
